Gas canister reminder as Community Recycling Centres revert to winter opening hours

As Bridgend County Borough’s Community Recycling Centres revert to winter opening hours next week, local residents are being reminded that they are the best places to safely recycle any empty gas canisters left over from the summer camping season.

Last summer, several small fires broke out at the Kier depot in Tondu due to gas canisters finding their way among the other materials that get compressed into bails for recycling.

Because empty cooking gas canisters contain traces of propane or butane, this creates an extremely dangerous combination if they end up with the recyclable materials that get compressed at the depot, or if they are put in bin bags that get compressed in the refuse trucks. The safest way to dispose of gas canisters is to take them to the Community Recycling Centres in Maesteg, Tythegston and Brynmenyn.

Councillor Hywel Williams, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Deputy Leader

From 1 October through to 31 March, the sites are open daily from 9:00am to 4:00pm, apart from on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
