GCSE exam results for Bridgend County Borough

Pupils across Bridgend County Borough are today (Thursday 12 August) receiving their GCSE exam results for 2021.

Many schools are offering staggered time slots for students to come in and collect their results with all schools being open and available to offer support and advice to students where needed.

This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, learners undertaking GCSEs approved by Qualifications Wales have had their results awarded through a centre-determined grade model.

This means that grades have been awarded by schools and colleges based on an assessment of the learner’s work using a range of evidence, including non-exam assessment elements, mock-exams and classroom work.

For WJEC examinations, students were issued provisional centre-assessed grades in June along with an opportunity to appeal if they felt that there may have been an error. The approved grades are being issued today.

Official results have revealed that the 2021 national pass rate for A*-C grades is 73.6 per cent, and that a total of 98.5 per cent of pupils have scored A* to G grades.

I hope that the hard work of our pupils has delivered the grades they deserve, and that whether they are continuing with their studies at sixth form or Bridgend College, accessing new training opportunities or seeking employment, they are well prepared for the next stage of their lives.

As always, the council and its partners will ensure that learners receive full support throughout this important period of transition. The past 18 months has been a difficult time for everyone, but particularly learners with the disruption to their education.

Anyone who did not receive the grades they were hoping for can access a wide range of advice, support and confidential counselling, so please make sure that you speak to your school or Careers Wales for more information.
