GCSE exam results for Bridgend County Borough

Pupils across Bridgend County Borough have received their GCSE exam results for 2020.
Following the cancellation of formal examinations due to the coronavirus pandemic and in line with the recent announcement from Welsh Government, the results for 2020 have been based on teacher-assessed grades instead of standardised outcomes.
Because of the unusual circumstances, information on this year’s results has only been made available on an all-Wales basis.
Official results have revealed that the 2020 national pass rate for A*-C grades is 74.5, and that a total of 99.6 per cent of pupils have scored A* to G grades.
Education Minister Kirsty Williams confirmed earlier this week that the statistical standardisation process developed by the Welsh Joint Education Committee (WJEC) exam board and Qualifications Wales would not be used, and that for 2020, teacher-assessed grades would be issued to all students receiving GCSEs, A and AS levels, Skills Challenge Certificates and Welsh Baccalaureates.
The impact of coronavirus has been felt in all aspects of our lives, but 2020 has been an especially difficult year for young people. The decision by the education minister to trust in teacher-assessed grades is absolutely the right thing to do. My Cabinet colleagues and I have advised against the use of an algorithm, and have advocated the use of teacher assessments since the cancellation of exams was first announced several months ago.
I hope that the hard work of our pupils has delivered the grades which they deserve, and that whether they are continuing with their studies at A-level, accessing new training opportunities or seeking employment, they are well prepared for the next stage of their lives.
