Homes can fill an extra bin bag this Christmas

Households in Bridgend County Borough will be able to put out one extra bin bag this Christmas.

While residents are usually restricted to filling two bin bags each fortnight, each home will be permitted to put out one extra bin bag for their first refuse collection after Christmas Day to help accommodate all of the additional rubbish accumulated over the festive season.

Bridgend County Borough Council has also confirmed that there will be some changes to waste and recycling collections over Christmas and New Year.

There WILL be collections on Christmas Eve but there WON’T be any collections on Christmas Day or Boxing Day so everything will be picked up two days later than normal for the rest of that week.

Collections will be made as usual on New Year’s Eve, but there won’t be any collections on New Year’s Day so everything will be one day later up until Saturday 5 January. Collections will be back to normal from Monday 7 January.

As you can often be left with a mountain of rubbish at Christmas time that can’t be recycled, we’re going to relax the usual two bin bag rule so that households can fill one extra bag if they need to.

The main festive item that can’t be recycled is wrapping paper, while certain types of packaging can’t either such as black plastic, cellophane wrap and polystyrene. However, almost everything else can be recycled, including your food waste. Don’t forget that all of the envelopes from your Christmas cards can go in your white sack with the rest of your paper, while when the time comes to take your cards down they can be recycled in your orange sack.

Please recycle as much as possible so that only your left over bits and bobs end up in the bin.

Councillor Hywel Williams, the council’s Deputy Leader

Rather than using one of their allocation of blue bin bags, residents are recommended to use a black bin bag should they need to use the extra allowance for their first refuse collection following Christmas Day.
