Jam-packed ‘Summer of Fun’ lined up for Bridgend

A whole host of fun and exciting activities are taking place this summer for children and young people across the county borough.

Bridgend County Borough Council and its many partners have been working together to create the ‘Summer of Fun’ programme which is soon to be published.

Among the wide variety of activities are the free Active 4 Life schemes which offer children aged eight to 11 fun and varied activity sessions focused on sports, games, arts and creative activities.

Delivered by Bridgend County Borough Council and Halo Leisure and with support by town and community councils, they will run throughout the school holidays with full details being found on the Council and Halo webpages from Friday 16 July.

The Urdd will offer a range of free bilingual Sports Camps, giving three to 11 year olds a chance to try a range of team sports, games and activities such as rugby, football and netball while having fun.

Young ambassador volunteers from across our schools have set a challenge for children, young people and families to try ’21 things to do in summer 21’ with a wide variety of fun challenges ranging from stargazing to making a den.

There are even activities to enjoy if the weather is bad with Bridgend County Borough Council partner Awen Cultural Trust challenging children to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge and read more books with this year’s theme being ‘Wild World Heroes’ – a nature themed challenge. In 2019, almost 3,000 local children took part and Awen are hoping even more will take part this year.

Bryngarw Country Park, Menter Bro Ogwr, and Halo Leisure are also offering a range of activities this summer and you can find out more about them on the BCBC website from Friday.

BCBC are also working with a range of community organisations and partners who are looking to offer opportunities close to home or for specific groups of young people.

To make sure that activities are Covid safe, many of the sessions may look different or have limited capacity - so where advanced booking is required, be sure to book early.

This summer’s ‘school’s out’ and ‘Summer of Fun’ programmes have an incredible range of exciting events and activities across the county borough, with something for all children and young people to enjoy.

Keeping children active throughout the holidays can seem like quite the challenge, but with so many free and low cost options on offer this year the real test may be fitting everything in.

I’d like to thank each of our partners for contributing to a programme of events and activities that I’m sure is going to be a big hit with local children and young people this summer.”

Councillor Dhanisha Patel, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Future Generations
