Maesteg Post Office new temporary base

Bridgend County Borough Council is working alongside the Post Office to ensure that the community of Maesteg can continue to benefit from a full town centre Post Office service.

Due to the resignation of the current postmaster and issues with the building lease, the current post office in Talbot Street will close at the end of May and move to temporary premises.

In a move designed to protect this vital community service, we have been working with the Post Office over the last few months to put together a contingency plan should it be needed.

The Post Office is a critical service for many residents and businesses, and it’s a priority for us to ensure that it remains in the town centre.

Council leader Huw David

Gareth Shylon, Post Office area network manager, said “Following the resignation of the current postmaster we have been searching for a way to retain Post Office services for our customers in Maesteg town centre.

“We have explored the option of using the current premises, which we do not own, with a temporary postmaster providing service, but as no agreement could be reached on this way forward then we have moved to find alternative temporary premises in the centre of the town, with the help of Bridgend County Borough Council.

“We are working together with the council on a solution as we jointly understand the importance of ensuring that customers in Maesteg can continue to access Post Office services after the end of the month from a temporary location.

“We really appreciate the council’s help - the premises in the outdoor market next to the bus station is a perfect location in the centre of the town and just a short distance from its current branch.  Our priority is to avoid any break in the Post Office services offered to residents and businesses in the town.”

The current Post Office service is located in Talbot Street, opposite the town hall.  This change only relates to the Post Office counter service, the Royal Mail service that operates from the same site is unaffected.

The aim is that the new temporary Post Office service will be open to customers at the end of May in line with the closure of the current branch.

Details of the new service, including opening hours and services available, are being finalised and will be confirmed in advance of the change.

The Post Office is currently advertising the permanent Post Office opportunity in Maesteg on its business opportunity website at www.runapostoffice.co.uk
