New facilities set to transform Cosy Corner in Porthcawl

All-new community facilities have been approved for Cosy Corner in Porthcawl after the Cabinet of Bridgend County Borough Council agreed to accept a funding offer that will help restore and transform the popular seafront location.

The £1m funding offer from the Welsh European Funding Office and Welsh Government brings the total available for the project to £2.1m, with the remaining funding being provided by the local authority.

The site, which is in urgent need of attention following the departure of contractors who worked on the unrelated maritime centre project, is set to benefit from a range of new facilities.

These include an all-new stone and glass-clad building incorporating premises suitable for retail and start-up enterprises, meeting space for community use, a parade square for the Sea Cadets, an office for the harbour master, changing facilities for users of the nearby marina and more.

The council also hopes to install a children’s play area and create new landscaping, public seating and a canopy structure capable of providing comfortable outdoor shelter from rain and the sun.

In addition to supporting the local authority’s ongoing plans for the development of the Salt Lake and Esplanade areas, the plans for Cosy Corner are intended to complement other regeneration projects such as the new marina, new sea defences, the recently restored Jennings Building, forthcoming improvements to the eastern breakwater and more.

This project is a very exciting opportunity. Cosy Corner has always been an iconic coastal landmark, and we want to maximise its potential.

This is something that we can be very proud of - a scheme which will not only restore the Cosy Corner site, but introduce all-new community facilities that will benefit residents and visitors alike.

While this project remains separate from our wider Salt Lake plans, it represents yet another phase in the town’s ongoing regeneration, and will complement other developments in the waterfront area such as the new marina, new sea defences, revamped Jennings Building and more.

Councillor Charles Smith, Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration
