Post-Brexit changes for car enthusiasts and the motor trade

Car enthusiasts and small motor businesses are being encouraged to familiarise themselves with new post-Brexit changes that will be in place from January 2022.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has warned that new import and export rules will be in place for anyone who sends or receives automotive parts between the UK and Europe.

The rules will also affect anyone who wants to travel across Europe in a vehicle to attend events such as classic car rallies.

While larger V.A.T. registered businesses will have familiarised themselves with the changes already, smaller businesses such as independent garages or specialist part retailers may not be fully aware of the changes to import and export rules.

To help people understand the new rules, HM Revenue and Customs has produced online guidance for enthusiasts, while an online trader tool is available to help ensure small businesses are not caught out by unexpected charges or unnecessary delays.

The guidance also includes details on how small businesses will need to meet requirements such as providing full customs declarations and more.

Small businesses who are also moving parts or equipment between Great Britain and Northern Ireland can register with the free Trader Support Service, while the HMRC customer forums enable you to receive answers to specific questions.
