Residents asked for views on Cowbridge Road active travel route

A consultation is underway with residents living near a proposed active travel route.

Bridgend County Borough Council introduced a temporary active travel route on Cowbridge Road, Bridgend, in November 2020 to link the Coychurch roundabout with the town centre, which forms an important part of the wider Bridgend to Pencoed active travel route.

The temporary scheme has now been removed and plans for a permanent route, which would be funded using Welsh Government grants, includes creating safer crossings at the York Road junction with Bridgend Industrial Estate.

The route along Cowbridge Road will link up with a new pedestrian and cycle route which is being created around Waterton roundabout. This will provide a link to the Brocastle active travel route on the A48, as well as a number of pedestrian routes in the area, providing safe crossing facilities where there are none at the moment.

Residents living along the road have been sent a letter and drawing of the proposed route with an invitation to share their views. The letter includes a postal address for responses, as well as an email address. All comments will be taken into consideration when the final design of the route is drawn up.

The deadline for the non-statutory consultation, which is being conducted in line with the appropriate guidance, has been extended to Tuesday 6 April 2021 to allow residents more time over the Easter break to respond.

Active travel routes aim to improve safety conditions to enable those who want to walk or cycle to leave their cars at home, helping reduce congestion and environmental pollution.

The council is also inviting residents to respond to its wider active travel consultation, which closes on Sunday 4 April.

Based on responses to a first phase consultation, draft route plans have been drawn up showing existing and proposed future active travel routes. You can view the draft map and have your say at the council's active travel routes consultation webpage.
