School catering jobs available within Bridgend County Borough

Bridgend County Borough Council is looking for people to join its Catering Services team to help prepare and serve meals for children at local schools.

More staff are required as, from September, Welsh Government will fund local authorities across Wales to begin rolling out the offer of a free, nutritious school meal, starting with Reception learners first.

This will mean that most children in Reception will start to receive universal primary free school meals from this September. The first year of the plan will focus on building capacity within school catering departments, before introducing the initiative to other primary school year groups.

There are many openings available for cooks, assistant cooks and general kitchen assistants, with employees receiving benefits such as flexible term-time working hours and access to a staff pension scheme. The Catering Services team also offers excellent rates of pay such as £9.50 an hour for a general kitchen assistant.

Continuous support from the management team is available as well as on-the-job training, and there are plenty of opportunities to study as you work and gain further qualifications. Please visit our website to view our latest vacancies.

We are looking for enthusiastic people who like working as part of a team, and who enjoy dealing with children on a regular basis.

Working within the council’s catering team is often ideal if you need to fit your job around your family commitments or if you are seeking your first paid job after leaving school.

It’s great to see that universal free school meals are starting to be rolled out in primary schools, but this will mean more staff are needed to cope with the increased demand. I would encourage anyone to apply and to play a key part in this very rewarding initiative.

Councillor Jon-Paul Blundell, Cabinet Member for Education
