Sponsorship to help drive Pencoed pupils onto further F1 competition success

A team of girls from Pencoed Comprehensive School have secured sponsorship from the Sinclair Group after the aspiring engineers impressed in the ‘F1 in Schools’ competition.
The four girls, Erin Tuck, Olivia Lewis, Annabella Lewis and Libby Cattedra – all aged 11 to 13 – competed in the South Wales finals of the annual contest earlier this year by designing, developing and manufacturing their own ‘mini-car’ and pit display under their team name, ‘Nemesis Inferno’.
They won the award for Best Team Identity and came third in the Development Class category.
Their sponsorship from the Sinclair Group will help support the girls as they work towards competing in the Professional Class of the competition in March 2019.
Matthew Thompson, Design and Technology teacher at Pencoed Comprehensive added: “The girls did superbly well at the F1 in schools competition as they were competing against pupils who were much older than them. This sponsorship is a testament to the extremely impressive work that they have produced and their incredible potential. I believe that this team holds some of the highest achieving female engineers of the future.”
As well as receiving sponsorship to support their future aspirations, the girls have also been invited by former racing driver Susie Wolff to attend an event in Manchester in November to celebrate their achievements in the motor industry.
It’s fantastic to see that the girls are so interested in engineering and that their potential is being recognised. Encouraging more females into STEM careers (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is a national priority so I would like to commend Pencoed Comprehensive School for the way that they are inspiring their pupils to develop skills that are required in the engineering industry.

As well as Pencoed Comprehensive, other local schools also took part in this year’s ‘F1 in schools’ competition, with teams from Brynteg School making it through to the national finals.
