Young people aged 16 – 17 prepare to vote for the first time

More than half of all local 16-17 year olds in Bridgend County Borough have registered to vote for the first time in the forthcoming Senedd elections.
Around 1,600 eligible teenagers will take part after 51.5 per cent of 16-17 year olds registered ahead of the recent electoral deadline.
It follows legislation which was passed by Welsh Parliament in 2019 to enable more than 70,000 eligible teenagers across Wales to vote in future Senedd elections.
In total, 112,257 residents of Bridgend County Borough have registered to vote – 65,874 in the Bridgend constituency, and 46,383 in the Ogmore constituency.
Elections for the Senedd and office of Police and Crime Commissioner will be held on Thursday 6 May along with a local by-election for the Nantymoel ward.
Votes cast in the Nantymoel by-election will be counted and announced that same night.
The count for the Senedd election will take place on Friday 7 May, and the Police and Crime Commissioner count will be held on Saturday 8 May.
As soon as they have been confirmed, results will be uploaded to Bridgend County Borough Council’s election webpage.
