Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd Headteacher wins major award

Bridgend County Borough Council would like to congratulate Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd Headteacher Meurig Jones for being crowned the ‘Headteacher of the Year’ at the esteemed Professional Teaching Awards Cymru ceremony.

The awards shine a light on the high quality of teaching in Wales and celebrates the contributions of staff right across the country.

“As a boy from the Valleys and a passionate Welsh speaker, I’m truly humbled and honoured to have received this award,” said Meurig, who was appointed Headteacher at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd in 2016.

“It’s fantastic to work with an exceptional team of staff who work hard in ensuring that learners have the best Welsh-medium education possible.

“My favourite part of the job is working with the pupils. They truly are the best and knowing that we have the support of their parents and carers makes the job so rewarding. I’m grateful to be able to lead the school and celebrate the successes of learners and staff, be it academic, cultural or extra-curricular.

“I take every opportunity to promote the Welsh language, its culture and history here in Bridgend County Borough and I look forward to continuing my work in seeing the area grow its Welsh-medium provision in the near future.”

We would also like to say well done to Gill Sullivan from Maesteg School, who was nominated in the ‘Supporting Teaching and Learning’ category.

Gill has worked in the school for over 12 years, and in that time, she has supported thousands of children through some very challenging times. She made over 2,000 phone calls during the first lockdown to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the most vulnerable children.

This is an outstanding achievement for Meurig and everybody at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd. Meurig’s passion for Welsh-medium education is unquestionable and the award is thoroughly deserved.

I’d also like to praise Gill Sullivan for the vital contributions she makes at Maesteg School. Her commitment to the pupils’ wellbeing is really impressive and I’m sure her crucial work has not gone unnoticed by all the pupils and staff at the school.
