Community recycling centres

You can recycle most of your waste at our community recycling centres.

What you can recycle at your local centre

Before visiting your local community recycling centre, please check that we are able to take your waste. We can recycle:

  • batteries (car and household)
  • bikes
  • bric-a-brac
  • cans
  • cardboard
  • cooking oil
  • gas cylinders
  • glass bottles and jars
  • green/garden waste
  • electrical and electronic items
  • fridges/freezers
  • motor oil
  • paper
  • paint
  • plastics
  • scrap metal
  • soil
  • textiles
  • wood

Please note

Please sort recycling before arriving at the community recycling centre to avoid delays. Bags of domestic waste can be put into the general waste skip, but won’t be accepted if they contain any material that can be recycled.

Asbestos is accepted at the Tythegston centre only with a tipping permit. A charge will apply.

Plasterboard and rubble are classed as construction waste and are limited to two manageable bags only. For larger quantities, you will need to book a skip or waste removal company. Trade waste is not accepted.

Don’t leave waste outside the community recycling centres. You could be prosecuted for fly tipping.

Tipping permits

If you want to take a van or trailer into the Tythegston or Maesteg community recycling centre, you may need a tipping permit. This helps us to control the disposal of non-household waste.

Vehicles that require a permit include:

  • short wheel based vans
  • trailers between 5ft and 6ft 6in (1.5m to 2m) in length
  • 4x4 SUV pick-ups (open or closed back)

Larger vehicles or trailers are not permitted to use the community recycling centres. If you are using a car or a trailer under 5ft in length then you don’t need to register your vehicle before visiting.

Please note that vans and trailers cannot be taken to our Brynmenyn centre.

Getting a tipping permit

Tipping permits can be obtained free of charge by calling us on 01656 643643 at least 48 hours before you want to visit one of the centres.

You will need to provide the following details:

  • your name and address
  • a list of items you want to recycle
  • the date and centre that you wish to attend
  • your vehicle’s registration number, make and model

In some cases we may need to inspect the waste that you want to dispose before granting a permit. This can be done at your home.
