Safeguarding adults at risk
An adult at risk is an adult who:
- is experiencing or is at risk of abuse or neglect
- has needs for care and support
- is unable to protect themselves against abuse or neglect or the risk of it
Definition of abuse and neglect
Abuse could be physical, sexual, psychological, emotional or financial. It includes abuse taking place in any setting, whether in a private dwelling, an institution or any other place. Everyone has a right to live their lives free from violence, abuse and exploitation. We work with partner agencies to safeguard people.
Duty to make enquiries
If a local authority suspects a person within its area is an adult at risk, it must make enquiries. This will help it to decide whether any action should be taken. If action is to be taken, these enquiries also help it decide what needs to be done and who should do it.
What to do if you suspect an adult is at risk
You must inform the local authority of an adult at risk.
You can contact the Adult Safeguarding Team for Bridgend County Borough using the contact details at the bottom of this page. They will be able to discuss your concerns with you and advise you on what action may be taken. You will be listened to and taken seriously.
